Kids most times look forward to summer break as it offers them ample time and opportunity to have fun, bond with family and friends, learn and discover new things, and make new friends. However, this also presents loads of work, tasks and responsibilities on parents as they try to ensure that their kids are safe, while having during the summer break.

Parents also plan various activities – both outdoor and indoor, for their kids during summer, as a way of spicing it up and making it a reliving moment and experience for them. Safety first, they say. So, it is important that the kids’ safety overrides whatever activities you have lined up for them. In as much as you want them to have all the fun and excitement with tales to tell their friends at school at the end of summer, their safety should be priority.

Here, I’ve outlined 7 essential summer care and safety tips for kids that parents should observe to keep their kids safe whilst having all the fun this summer;

Dress for the Weather

This is really vital; you should dress your kids for the weather. Summer has the warmest weather, so it is advisable to wear your kids light, cotton clothes that they are comfortable in. During outdoor activities, it is pertinent to wear them clothes that protect their skin from sunrays.

Prepare Healthy, Light and Sumptuous Delicacies

Yes, summer is about having fun and I know as a parent you want your kids to get a taste of variety of delicacies. However, it is more important that your kids eat healthy. Ensure that their diet is replete with essential vitamins and minerals. Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, coconut, berries, salads, cucumber and yoghurts are really healthy for summer, and they keep the body hydrated which is crucial. Also, you could spice things up when preparing your children’s foods. For example, when making their favourite cookies, you could create various designs and shapes; or you could add a secret ingredient to their favourite pizza and tell them to guess what it is!

Protect their Skin from Bug and Mosquito Bites

You don’t want your kid(s) falling ill or developing a rash or sore on their skin, so it is vital to protect their skin from mosquito and bug bites by using mosquito nets and repellants.

Ensure Your Kids Stay Hydrated

Your kids should always be hydrated, particularly during summer so you should give them lot of water to drink. You could also blend fruits to make juices and smoothies. Milk shake is also a healthy option for kids. You can make your own home-made juice and smoothie by blending carrot and orange, or kale and pineapple juice; carrot, orange and pear, strawberry and pineapple, blueberry and banana.

Observe Car Safety Tips

I know you’d love to take your kids out frequently during summer, however, you should observe car safety tips for children. These safety tips include; activate the child’s safety locks, lock the power windows, follow the law, fit the seat belt correctly, ensure the seat is fitted correctly, and never remove your child from the seat while driving.

Protect Their Skin from Sunlight

Inasmuch as you want your kids to not miss out on the glitz and fun of summer, you should also ensure that they are protected from sunrays, while you take them out and they participate in outdoor activities. Tips for protecting your children’s skin from direct sunlight include; try to stay under a shade while you stay outside, and apply sunscreen. Also, ensure that they bathe regularly and give them fruits and vegetables.

Carefully Observe Them When Out to Swim

Swimming is undoubtedly one of the most engaged activities during summer. Hence, it is pertinent to ensure that your kids are not endangered during swimming. You should prevent and protect your kids from drowning and make sure they follow swimming instructions for your their safety. Furthermore, when you go on a boat cruise, also ensure your kids wear a life jacket for their safety.
